THE VALLEY OF WALSER

(AT THE FOOT OF MONTE ROSA)

The Valsesia is an extensive region with an extremely varied landscape. The broad flat stretch between Borgosesia and Varallo is filled with numerous industrial establishments (papermaking, wool and plumbing fixtures) whilst the narrow and twisted regions of the upper part of the valley are home to many exceptional examples of religious art.

Walser villages cling to the south-east wall of Monte Rosa. High and imposing, with freezing waterfalls, some of these peaks exceed 4,000 metres in height. The river Sesia is also worth a visit. Tourism, particularly for canoeing and rafting has recently been developed in this area. Lame del Sesia, a protected zone near Vercelli, is home to many important species of river bird.

The proposed itinerary begins near Borgosesia at the S. Anna Sanctuary and the chapels dedicated to the Madonna. The Monte Fenera Nature Park, which commands a good view of the lower Sesia Valley's hills, is situated in this area.

A little further along, the route leads to the lively and picturesque town of Varallo Sesia where, in the Church of Santa Maria, Gaudenzio Ferrari’s frescos can be seen and where the ascent to the Sacro Monte di Varallo, or "new Jerusalem" as it is often called, begins. It is the most important Sacro Monte in Piedmont, and has been the inspiration of many pilgrimages.

Having crossed the entire Valsesia, one arrives at the Alagna Valsesia, an old Walser town, distinctive because of the exceptional wooden architecture. Some of the most beautiful houses can be seen in the Le Piane district and in the Vallone d'Otro. The Alagna Valsesia museum preserves the memory of this sophisticated civilisation of Alpine peasants.

The Alta Valsesia Nature Park is a typical high mountain park populated with chamois and wild goats. The walls and glaciers of Monte Rosa offer excellent excursions.

 

Wine and food of the itinerary

Valsesia's cuisine offers dishes that are poor in ingredients but rich in local imagination. One example is "miacce", simple flour crepes filled as you like with sauces, jams or honey. Toma, a typical cheese of the Valsesia valleys, which is produced in the mountain pastures and in the modern Caseificio di Piode dairy, well deserves a place of honour among the area's products.

TORTA WALSER Knead 100 gr. of corn meal with 4 eggs. Add 4 apples, 300 gr. of toma cheese, 1 "salami della duja" and 2 very finely chopped onions. Bake in a low baking pan for about 40 minutes at 180°C. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with sugar. Serve warm or cold.
